Addressing the Silences:
Building Reciprocal Community Partnerships
How do we move from acknowledging past exclusion to building truly equitable community relationships? This was the core question behind Addressing the Silences, a national project led by our team—Stacey, Braden, and Linda—in our previous roles at the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.
Funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, we guided thirteen museum-community partner teams on a three-year journey from reflection to action. We provided the framework and support needed to build reciprocal relationships, which in turn dismantled exclusionary policies, fostered more inclusive practices, and led to powerful co-created projects that centered previously silenced stories. The work was transformative, creating trusting, long-term partnerships that have fundamentally changed how these institutions operate and collaborate.
